Have you heard of The Rabbit Effect? During a study in 1978 on cholesterol and heart health that used rabbits as subjects, researchers discovered that while all of the rabbits were fed the same fatty foods, one group had significantly fewer fatty deposits in their arteries. Why? Because “the group that had significantly better health outcomes was under the care of an unusually affectionate researcher who talked to them, cuddled and petted them, while the other group were simply fed. In other words, she was kind,” says a Columbia Psychiatry article.
In her book The Rabbit Effect: Live Longer, Happier, and Healthier with the Groundbreaking Science of Kindness, Kelli Harding explores the research further. One point she talks about is “the ripple effect of kindness.” This is the idea “that people can ‘pass on’ acts of kindness.” In her conversation with Columbia Psychiatry, Harding said, “The kindness data shows that your actions matter. This could be saying good morning to someone you pass by, waving at a neighbor, asking the cashier how their day is going, thanking a co-worker, or picking up a piece of trash on the sidewalk….The ripple effect of kindness happens in the million tiny moments of our everyday lives.”
The Personal Touch
Unfortunately, the personal touch often gets lost in the shuffle of the fast-paced highly digital interactions of our daily lives. The value of a warm smile, a heartfelt compliment, or simply holding the door open cannot be overstated. These actions might seem insignificant, but they remind us all that we are seen, we are valued, and we belong. Here at First Utah Bank, we cherish this personal touch. Being able to greet customers with a smile, celebrate their milestones with them, or help in moments of need may seem like little things, but we believe they are important.
At First Utah Bank, we are reminded daily of the profound impact small gestures can have on both individuals and the broader Salt Lake City community. Each act of kindness, no matter how modest, creates ripples that reach far beyond the initial splash. In a world clamoring for attention and filled with hustle, it’s easy to overlook these small acts. But the truth is that these tiny yet powerful deeds are the fibers that strengthen the tight fabric of our community.
Community Growth and Well-Being
Beyond the doors of First Utah Bank, every gesture of kindness sown into the community can take root in great ways. Organizing local clean-ups, volunteering, or even supporting small businesses—all are acts of care that strengthen the social fabric, encouraging a sustainable and thriving environment in which each member feels supported and empowered to contribute their unique gifts. A community that continually experiences kindness is bound to be a healthier, happier, and more inclusive place. Acts of charity can help alleviate the struggles of our community members and foster an atmosphere of generosity that can inspire others to pay it forward.
Being part of the community is about so much more than just banking to us—it’s about rolling up our sleeves and getting involved, about making a real difference. Through our Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) program, we’ve had the joy of supporting incredible local nonprofits that work tirelessly to uplift our neighbors and bring us all a little closer together. One of these is The Power of Kind, a nonprofit that champions the power behind small acts to make big changes. Learn more about our partnership here.
Let’s Make Our Own Ripples
Since kindness can have exponential effects, extending well beyond the initial recipient, let’s branch out and touch the lives around us. For example, purchasing a coffee for a stranger can lead to an infectious chain of passing kindness forward, where the spirit of giving touches hearts and opens doors to new connections. This generosity instills a sense of interdependence, reminding us that we are all part of something larger than ourselves. We see each act of kindness as an investment in the social wealth of our community—an investment that yields returns beyond measure.
Never underestimate the influence of a single act of kindness. Those little gestures of compassion trigger a wonderful cascade within; boosting happiness, improving heart health, and even lengthening lifespans. At First Utah Bank, we take this to heart because we’re all neighbors here. We believe in the power of kindness to transform our day-to-day interactions into something truly meaningful. That’s what being a part of Utah’s community is all about—helping and supporting one another, every step of the way.
By choosing to weave acts of kindness into the very heart of our daily interactions, we help to shape a community reflective of our highest values and deepest connections. Together, let’s create a legacy of kindness that stands as enduring as our beloved mountains, one small act at a time.
