Great! You know you want to move forward with a home improvement or renovation project. However, how do you even begin to find a contractor to work with you?
First, know exactly what you want done. This will help any contractor know how to better estimate the cost and time frame for the project.
Consider the type of project. Do you need someone with a background in a specific skill such as a carpenter, plumber or electrician? Or do you need each of them for the project and require more of a general contractor who outsources such tasks?
Start to ask for names contractors your friends, relatives and even your co-workers can recommend. Social media also allows you to ask and research such providers as well.
Choose at least three of these to talk to and ask for written bids. This allows you to compare bids as well as “interview” your potential contractors. You also will want to ask for references from previous clients as well as photos of completed projects. Again, social media and websites also give you insight into what they have done in the past as well as feedback from other clients.
Not everyone with a ladder on their truck is adequately prepared to complete the job. You will want to make sure any contractor you use has proper insurance and licenses in place as well as knows the local code and permit requirements for your project.
And don’t forget, we are ready to help finance your renovation through our home lending products. You can find more information through the Home Lending tab on our website.
