Utah’s job growth rate remains one of the strongest in the country, according to the 2019 Economic Report to the Governor. The number of jobs in Utah increased by about 48,500 to 1.5 million in 2018, according to the report, a year-over-year increase of 3.3 percent
Utah is seeing strong gains in a number of industries, such as health care, construction, retail trade and professional and business services.
Growth in the professional and business services sectors is particularly important because it includes such occupations as lawyers, architects, computer programmers and engineers, and the average annual wage is above $70,000. This sector is expected to grow by 7,700 jobs this year!
While economists were expecting strong construction job gains, given mega projects like redevelopment of the Salt Lake International Airport and construction of a new Utah State Prison, they were not expecting strong retail job growth because of the challenge online retailing presents to retailers. Yet since 2010, only Washington state has had a higher growth rate in retail jobs. The retail sector is Utah’s largest in terms of jobs — 170,000 to be precise.
The construction sector, where demand for workers has pushed the average wage to nearly $50,000, is expected to add 5,500 jobs this year, the report prepared by the Utah Economic Council said.
